What we handle
Dog bites can cause deep wounds, infections, scarring and lasting fear, especially in children. Most claims are paid by the dog owner's homeowners or renters insurance, not out of the owner's pocket.
How New York dog bite law works
New York follows the "vicious propensity" rule. An owner is responsible for the injuries if they knew or should have known the dog had dangerous tendencies. Signs include prior bites, aggressive behavior, a history of jumping on people or being kept chained or muzzled. If the dog was previously declared a "dangerous dog", the owner is strictly liable for medical costs.
This makes early investigation important. We talk to neighbors, gather animal control and prior complaint records, and get the dog's history.
Dog bite injuries we handle
- Bites to the face, hands and legs, including children's injuries
- Scarring that may need plastic surgery
- Infections and nerve damage
- Knockdowns and falls caused by a dog, often hurting older adults
- Attacks by dogs at rental properties, where the landlord may share responsibility
When an attack involves unsafe property conditions or a rental building, we also evaluate premises liability and landlord liability claims.
